About the Study of Early Child Care & Youth Development (SECCYD)
The Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD) is a national longitudinal study conducted at 10 research sites beginning in 1991, and still in progress today. 1,364 children and their families were enrolled in the study at birth. The study was designed to examine early child care and its effects on children’s development, in particular five parameters of child care experience: age of entry into care, continuity of care, type of care, amount or quantity of care, and quality of care.

FUNDING
National Institute of Child Heath and Human Development (NICHD)
NICHD was established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, with the support of Congress, to study the "complex process of human development from conception to old age." (https://www.nichd.nih.gov/about/Pages/index.aspx) NICHD has partnered with the University of California Irvine, and nine other institutions, to conduct Study of Early Child Care & the Youth Development (SECCYD) the most comprehensive study of child care and child development ever conducted. NICHD funded Phase I through Phase IV, which evaluated the period from birth to high school, including the high school "Relationship Study".
The Mott Foundation was founded by Charles Stewart Mott. He was "an automotive pioneer, community leader and philanthropist who cared about innovation, a just society, and the strength of communities. Today, Mott Foundation ... (supports) nonprofits dedicated to civil society, education, the environment and ...aim to strengthen what Mr. Mott called “the capacity for accomplishment.” (https://www.mott.org/about/) The Mott Foundation funded Phase V- Phase Vl, which evaluated the period from the end of high school through the Age 26 follow-up. These generous contributions have made this most ambitious research possible. The research conducted based, on these longitudinal studies, will vastly contribute to several bodies of knowledge and future studies related to afterschool programs, human growth & development, and education as whole. |
